We now know that waiting until a child's enlarged tonsils shrink may cause airway problems, as well as poor facial growth. Children with enlarged tonsils can end up with complicated orthodontic problems, TMJ problems and headaches, and damaging sleep disorders such as sleep apnea.

If you notice that your child is mouthbreathing or snoring at night, tossing and turning during sleep, getting sore throats a lot, or has crowded teeth, he or she should be screened for an airway problem caused by enlarged tonsils. Dr. Raymond recommends all children over the age of 4 be examined for tonsillar enlargements so any problems can be corrected early.
